Introducci�n.- La Organizaci�n Mundial de la Salud proyecta un incremento superior a los 11 millones de muertes por c�ncer para el 2030. La incidencia del c�ncer en el Ecuador, basada en la poblaci�n de Quito, indica un ligero pero sostenido incremento Material y M�todos.- Estudio observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal desde enero de 1985 a diciembre de 2003. Se tom� para este estudio cuatro provincias del nororiente del pa�s, que en conjunto, han sido denominadas Cuenca Amaz�nica Ecuatoriana. Se calcularon tasas de incidencia cruda y estandarizada por edad y por a�o. Resultados.- Los hallazgos de este estudio muestran una tasa de incidencia estandarizada de 20 casos por 100.000 habitantes. Alrededor del 50% de los casos de c�ncer corresponden a pacientes con educaci�n primaria y cerca del 25% de los casos a pacientes con ning�n nivel de educaci�n. Conclusiones.- El estimado de incidencia de c�ncer de c�rvix en la Cuenca Amaz�nica Ecuatoriana es similar al reportado en Quito a pesar de un evidente subregistro de los casos que provoca una subestimaci�n del par�metro poblacional. Introduction.- The World Health Organization expects an increase to more than 11 million cancer deaths by 2030. The incidence of cancer in Ecuador, based on the population of Quito, indicates a slight but steady increase of this disease during the last three decades. In 2010, cancer accounted for the fourth and fifth leading cause of death in Ecuadorian men and women respectively. That is why it is proposed to establish, from national registries, basic descriptive information about cervical cancer in one of the most unequal regions of Ecuador. Material and Methods.- Descriptive, longitudinal, observational study from January 1985 to December 2003. For this study four provinces from thenortheastern region of the country were considered, which together have been called “Cuenca Amaz�nica Ecuatoriana”. Crude incidence and standardized by age and year rates were calculated. Results.- Findings from this study showed a standardized incidence rate of 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. About 50% of cancer cases occur in patients with primary education level and about 25% of cases in patients with any level of education. Conclusions.- The estimated incidence of cervical cancer in the group “Cuenca Amaz�nica Ecuatoriana” is similar to that reported in Quito despite an apparent underreporting of cases that causes an underestimation� of the population parameter.
