Las amebas de vida libre como huéspedes en el sistema nervioso central, son pobremente comprendidas y estudiadas. La evolución de la enfermedad es fatal, sumado a la dificultad del diagnóstico, la mayoría de casos son identificados post mórtem. Varios autores han reportado casos de meningoencefalitis amebiana en pacientes con inmunodeficiencia multifactorial en los cuales el diagnóstico se realiza tras biopsia de cerebro.
A pesar de la terapia antimicrobiana de amplio espectro los resultados son fatales. El manejo de estos casos constituye un desafío, y el diagnóstico definitivo debe ser analizado por neuropatólogos experimentados. Decidimos presentar este caso por la rara incidencia de esta patología. |

The free-living amoebae as hosts in the central nervous system are poorly understood and studied. The course of the disease is fatal, added to the difficulty of diagnosis, most cases are identified postmortem. Several authors have reported cases of amebic meningoencephalitis in patients with immunodeficiency multifactorial in which the diagnosis is made after brain biopsy. Despite the broad spectrum antimicrobial therapy results are fatal. The management of these cases is challenging, and definitive diagnosis should be analyzed by experienced neuropathologists. We decided to present this case for the rare incidence of this disease. |
