The GVDHD is a syndrome that occurs when immunocompetent donor T cells recognize the recipient’s tissues as foreign and try to destroy them. Depending on the time of appearance of lesions it is divided into two clinical forms, acute and chronic. The acute form is characterized by skin, liver, and gastrointestinal manifestations presented during the first 100 days transplantation (19 - 66%) and it remains the leading cause of death in more than 20% of patients. While the chronic condition is a multisystem and can occur after an acute form, after its resolution, or arise de novo, after 100 days of transplantation (33 - 64 % ).
Early diagnosis is critical because it can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Treatment is based on the use of corticosteroids in combination with other immunosuppressive agents.
Key words.- Graft versus host disease, acute, chronic, clinical, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. |
