Introducción.- Al aumentar la expectativa de vida de la población, y disminuir la mortalidad por enfermedades infectocontagiosas, el cáncer se sitúa entre las principales causas de muerte en los países desarrollados, y Cuba no escapa a esa propensión. Por lo que nos propusimos caracterizar la mortalidad por los tumores malignos más frecuentes en el adulto mayor del municipio Plaza de la Revolución durante el quinquenio 2004-2008. Introduction.- With increasing life expectancy of the population and reducing mortality from infectious diseases, cancer is among the leading causes of death in developed countries, and Cuba is no exception to this tendency . Therefore we set out to characterize the mortality from most common malignant tumors in the elderly of the municipality of Plaza de la Revolution during the five years between 2004 and 2008.
Material anfd Methods.- We performed a descriptive study to characterize the behavior of mortality from most common malignant tumors in
the elderly of the Plaza de la Revolution during the five years 2004 2008. Variables were considered: anatomical location, sex, age and health area. The data processing was performed using the database created using SPSS 16.0 for Microsoft Windows Statiscal measures used were percentages, ratios, proportions and rates.

Results.- The locations that occupied the top cause of death in men were lung, 294.8 per 100.000 habitants and prostate, 254.1 per 100.000 habitants, in women 116.5 per 100.000 habitants for lung and breast 112.1 per 100.000 habitants. Depending on age, 75 and over, was the most affected in both sexes.
Conclusions.- The anatomical sites of malignant tumors that caused more deaths in adults over the Plaza de la Revolutions in the period 2004-2008 were lung and prostate in men and lung and berast cancer in women. In both sexes, with prevelance over 75 years.
