Introduction.- In recent years there has been an increase in the incidence of upper gastrointestinal cancers in Ecuador. In most cases they are fatal, because they are often detected at advanced stages. Early detection of precancerous lesions allows timely interventions to reduce dramatically morbidity and mortality caused by this group of diseases. Many of the malignant lesions require several years to transform in cancer therefore its detection by endoscopy in young patients could provide the conditions necessary for treatment. The main objective of this study is to determine the incidence of preneoplastic lesions in upper gastrointestinal patients, ages 15 to 44 years, who underwent gastroscopy in 2009. Material and methods.- We performed a descriptive, transversal study, no experimental design, incorporating all cases of young patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from January to December 2009 in the Gastroenterology Service of SOLCA Guayaquil (100 patients). To describe the characteristics of the population we use simple frequencies, Results.- The results showed that the prevalence of preneoplastic injury among young patients is17% with a monthly incidence of 1%.The patients affected had an average age of 33,6 ± 8 years. The women are the most affected (71%). Preneoplastic lesions are usually located in the stomach (71%). There is more than one injury in 36% of cases. The most prevalent preneoplastic injury is intestinal metaplasia (48%).
