Abstract:

The Positron Emission Tomography scan (PET scan) is a diagnosis method based on nuclear medicine that offers tridimensional images to analyze changes in brain metabolism through radioactive tracers, these changes are observed in images. In neuro-oncological patients, PET scan with Cranial Computed Tomography (CT) scan and Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) offer important information to surgical planning.

It has an objective value to improve diagnosis between brain and extra-cerebral tumor extension as appropriate. It provides the differential diagnosis of radionecrosis from tumor recurrence, which cannot be achieved with MRI and helps to determine the prognosis. In recurrent multiform glioblastoma, it defines the extent of injury through commisural  and projection fibers , which  cannot be seen with other imaging procedures. Therefore, it should be recommended to use it in neuro-oncological patients to define diagnosis  and prognosis ith greater certainty.
